This print is based on birds of paradise flower. One of the most striking memories I have from when I first moved to Hawaii is walking down the streets and often seeing the pavement line and littered with flowers. The colors and fragrances are intoxicating. May Day is not only the islands lei day and the beginning of the Merry Monarch festivities there are also a plethora of other cultural events during this time of year. In Hawaii we get to enjoy many of the hula halau with their pageantry dancing together in perfect unison in the most beautiful garments with flowers as the backdrops of the textiles. The flowers are also meticulously placed in the dancer’s hair or topped with a crafted haku (flower crown). The dancers dance to a mele (Hawaiian for Hawaiian song) that often tells the story of the islands and its majesty and flora.
